Daily Dose

A couple of things to cover in today's Daily Dose.

The Cowboy's made a few minor signings earlier today.  Tackle Cory Lekkerkerker was signed along with guard Adam Stenavich.  Neither have much experience in the NFL, Cory was released by the Dolphins this offseason and Stenavich hasn't played since 2006, where he was a member of the Packers' practice squad.  They will look to try to earn a spot on the roster, but more realistically the practice squad.

Two major players still remain without a contract for Dallas, and two Pro Bowl players at that.  Starting running back Marion Barber remains on the team with a one year tender deal that is worth $2.562 million.  After drafting Felix Jones in the first round in this years draft to be the compliment to Barber, it is essential that the Cowboys look to lock up Barber with a long term deal.

The other key player that remains without a major contract is safety Ken Hamlin.  After starting in the Pro Bowl this past season, the Cowboys chose to use the franchise tag on Hamlin.  He will make $4.396 million this upcoming season.  Jerry Jones will want to work towards signing both of these players to long term contracts and keep them on the team.

In other news, this summers training camp will start on July 25th, with the players needing to report on the 24th.  After spending three weeks at the Oxnard facility and being on tape the whole time for HBO Hard Knocks, they will head off to Denver and practice with the Broncos for a few days.  The following Saturday marks the preseason opener against the Chargers.

Tony Romo was at it again making headline stories over the past weekend.  After being somewhat criticized for deciding to try and qualify for the U.S. Open, Romo participated in activities at Wrigley Field during the Cubs game over the weekend.  Romo lead the way for the crowd in the singing of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game."  Also, Jessica Simpson and Romo may have called it quits as far as their relationship goes.

WR Terrell Owens' reaction to Romo's Wrigley Field performance - "Wow, that was the most terrible thing that's come across my ears. Dude, you just get back in bed and wake up on the other side. Because this side is not working for me. Leave the scene to Jessica Simpson. What do you think, Randy? Paula?"

Owens was impersonating Simon Cowell, and was doing so in a humorous way.  Settle down folks, he isn't trying to treat Romo like he did to past quarterbacks McNabb and Garcia.  Meanwhile, Owens is doing a bit of camera work himself.  He is in the process of promoting his appearance in the show "Under One Roof", which is featuring Flava Flav.  Here are a couple takes of T.O. - One...  Two...

And lastly, to all who are concerned about the Roy Williams dilemma - don't be.  Words from owner Jerry Jones were quite reassuring.

"I have, candidly, a lot of confidence in Roy Williams' competitiveness, his record as an outstanding football player," Jones said. "I know what a competitor he is, I know what a team player he is and that hasn't changed as far as I'm concerned. And for us to be the team we want to be, in my mind, we need Roy to really be the player he can be. That's possible to do here. We've got outstanding coaching in our secondary, with Dave Campo and (Brett) Maxie, as well as Brian Stewart.

"And so I don't know of a secondary player in the NFL that has a better opportunity than our secondary players do because of our coaching staff and the experience they've had there. When I look at it, I see the chance for Roy Williams really to have a fine year for us and do what he wants to do individually. I have a lot of faith in Roy Williams."

That's all for today, check back tomorrow.

Roy Williams Leaving?

The hype over the weekend has been all about safety Roy Williams, ranging from his status on this roster to whether or not he is even helping the team.  It has been no secret that his coverage has lacked over the years, but Roy still managed to make a name for himself by being one of the most vicious hitters in the league.

However, after an extremely rough season in 2007, questions now arise on Roy's future with Dallas.

According to OLB Greg Ellis, Roy Williams said himself that he doesn't feel he fits in with Wade's 3-4 scheme.  Ellis, who made the comments on a Sirius Satelite radio broadcast, went on to eleborate the situation.

Apparently, Williams' concerns with the system date back to last years training camp.

"He said, 'Greg, this defense does not fit me. I don't fit in well with this defense at all,'" Ellis said. "So when he told me that, I was like, 'Well, man, it's still new. Get used to it and it'll probably be fine for you.'"

It's quite obvious that William's didn't adjust well even after time, which lead to what most believed to be the worst year of his career.  On so many occasions Roy got beat in coverage and let up big plays.  Also, he even missed numerous open field tackles and didn't deliver any bone crushing hits like he has done in the past.  He was also caught out of position and penalized for using his very own horse-collar tackle several times.

Still, Roy Williams managed to sneak his way in to the Pro Bowl due to his popularity and the death of Redskins safety Sean Taylor.

Ellis also noted some things on the broadcast that he noticed about Williams.  He said that although he is still working out at the facility with the team, Roy leaves earlier than usual and doesn't spend time with his teammates anymore.  It's clear that Roy just doesn't feel like he fits in.  Most wouldn't if they were one of the only players who weren't benefiting on last years team.

"Now maybe this year, if they decide to keep him for this season, Wade and them will kind of adjust some things to fit him better," Ellis said.

If they decide to keep him?  Are the Cowboys shopping their starting safety?

Let's break this down.  What would happen if the Cowboys do release him?

Most likely, Pro-Bowler Ken Hamlin would take over the role at SS, a position that probably suits him better anyways.  At free safety, a couple of things could occur.  Pat Watkins, who has shown great development the last two years, could take over the starting role.  The Cowboys could also decide to move Anthony Henry to safety, especially now since the cornerback position has great depth, assuming Pacman gets to play.

However, this only leaves Courtney Brown and Dowayne Davis as the only other safeties on the roster.  The Cowboys would have to hope that God is on their side for no injuries.

But in all reality everybody, the Cowboys aren't going to get rid of Roy Williams.  If a trade situation was appealing enough, then maybe.  But not many teams are going to be wanting to take over his high contract, and the 'Boys won't cut him because the casualties suffered on the cap for the team would be too severe.

Dave Campo, the new secondary coach, should help Roy Williams adapt to the system and become a better player.  If he continues to struggle, then the Cowboys won't keep him around in 2009.  Simple as that.

WR Henry Interested in Cowboys

To the average eye, it would seem as though the Dallas Cowboys are more of a rehab center than a professional football team.  After signing troubled Tank Johnson once he was released out of jail and reinstated by the commish, and recently trading for still suspended cornerback Adam Jones, it looks like another troublesome player wants to rejuvenate his career in Dallas.

Bengals WR Chris Henry, who was suspended by the NFL last year, is now facing misdemeanor charges of assault and is awaiting trial as well as word from Roger Goodell on his NFL status for the 2008-09 season.  It is likely he will be facing another suspension if found guilty on the charges.

Chris Henry is currently confined to house arrest, but was given permission to seek visits to NFL teams after being released by the Bengals.

Apparently, he is interested in New Orleans and Dallas.

"There are two teams that I would always love to play for: That's New Orleans and Dallas," Henry said. "New Orleans is home for me. That's always been a big dream of mine. Hopefully I can get in there and sit down with the coaches and maybe have an opportunity to get down there. And Dallas is another team that I've always looked up to as a kid and wanted to play for them."

My two cents - if he is found innocent on the charges, and doesn't get punished by Goodell, he would be a perfect asset to the Cowboys, however, I still don't think he is worth the risk.

There is no doubt he would be productive, he is 6'4 with 4.3 speed.  In his career at Cincinnati he has 88 receptions for 1,370 yards and 17 touchdowns, and would give the Cowboys just what they need lining up opposite of Terrell Owens.

But don't get your hopes up - Jerry Jones loves giving players a second chance but he has to draw the line somewhere.  It is unlikely he will be in a Cowboys uniform anytime soon.

Cowboys Look to Add Veteran QB

The Cowboys chose not to draft a QB this past weekend, and now look to sign a veteran QB to backup starter Tony Romo through free agency.

The Cowboys currently have two QB's - Brad Johnson and Richard Bartel, who was on the practice squad.

Possible free agents that could be pursued -

  • Daunte Culpepper - unlikely because he probably would ask for too much money.
  • Trent Dilfer - threw for 7 TD's and 12 INT's last year with the 49ers.
  • Tim Hasselbeck - hasn't really played since 2003.
  • Byron Leftwich - released by Jags, signed by Falcons, and released again. Injury prone.
Also, Tampa Bay will probably release some of their six quarterbacks sometime soon.  Possible players -

  • Brian Griese
  • Chris Simms
  • Luke McCown
Of course, these players would only be competing for the backup position or even just 3rd string.

Eagles File Lawsuit Against Owens

Cowboys WR Terrell Owens apparently forgot to pay some of the bonus money back to the Eagles.  The lawsuit is for nearly $770,000 which T.O. owes the team for the 2004-2005 season.

Neither Owens nor his agent Drew Rosenhaus have returned calls from the Associated Press.

Early Mock Draft

Two days after the completion of the 2008 draft, experts have already started projecting an early 2009 mock draft.

The Cowboys are predicted to upgrade and get younger at the WR position, by taking LSU's Demetrius Byrd.

Read the full article and mock draft here.

Obviously, this mock draft isn't a good indication on what will happen.  The order is based on early power rankings and so it could be completely off.  However, the Cowboys likely will pursue a wide-out, assuming they do not trade for one or pick up a household name through free agency.

Fellow Mavs Eliminated

The Dallas-neighbor Mavericks got eliminated by the Hornets tonight, losing the series 4-1.

The Mav's traded for Jason Kidd in a controversial deal in hopes of boosting their chances of reaching the NBA Finals.

This is the second straight year the Mav's have been eliminated in the first round.  The Hornets will go on to play the Spurs.

Cowboys Assign Jersey Numbers To New Players

The newly drafted and acquired players received their jersey numbers.

CB Adam "Pacman" Jones will wear No. 21

RB Felix Jones will be No. 28

CB Mike Jenkins will take Roy Williams' No. 31

TE Martellus Bennett will wear No. 80

And of course Roy Williams is switching to No. 38 (his former number at Oklahoma).

Cowboys sign undrafted rookie free agents

A day after selecting six players in the 2008 draft, the Cowboys locked up some key undrafted rookie free agents that they feel can compete for a roster spot.  Although the Cowboys didn't take a WR in the draft, they added three young WR's today, including a talented wideout from Texas Tech.
