The hype over the weekend has been all about safety Roy Williams,
ranging from his status on this roster to whether or not he is even
helping the team. It has been no secret that his coverage has lacked
over the years, but Roy still managed to make a name for himself by
being one of the most vicious hitters in the league.
However, after an extremely rough season in 2007, questions now arise on Roy's future with Dallas.
According to OLB Greg Ellis, Roy Williams said himself that he doesn't
feel he fits in with Wade's 3-4 scheme. Ellis, who made the comments
on a Sirius Satelite radio broadcast, went on to eleborate the
situation.
Apparently, Williams' concerns with the system date back to last years training camp.
"He said, 'Greg, this defense does not fit me. I don't fit in well with
this defense at all,'" Ellis said. "So when he told me that, I was
like, 'Well, man, it's still new. Get used to it and it'll probably be
fine for you.'"
It's quite obvious that William's didn't adjust well even after time,
which lead to what most believed to be the worst year of his career.
On so many occasions Roy got beat in coverage and let up big plays.
Also, he even missed numerous open field tackles and didn't deliver any
bone crushing hits like he has done in the past. He was also caught
out of position and penalized for using his very own horse-collar
tackle several times.
Still, Roy Williams managed to sneak his way in to the Pro Bowl due to
his popularity and the death of Redskins safety Sean Taylor.
Ellis also noted some things on the broadcast that he noticed about
Williams. He said that although he is still working out at the
facility with the team, Roy leaves earlier than usual and doesn't spend
time with his teammates anymore. It's clear that Roy just doesn't feel
like he fits in. Most wouldn't if they were one of the only players
who weren't benefiting on last years team.
"Now maybe this year, if they decide to keep him for this season, Wade
and them will kind of adjust some things to fit him better," Ellis said.
If they decide to keep him? Are the Cowboys shopping their starting safety?
Let's break this down. What would happen if the Cowboys do release him?
Most likely, Pro-Bowler Ken Hamlin would take over the role at SS, a
position that probably suits him better anyways. At free safety, a
couple of things could occur. Pat Watkins, who has shown great
development the last two years, could take over the starting role. The
Cowboys could also decide to move Anthony Henry to safety, especially
now since the cornerback position has great depth, assuming Pacman gets
to play.
However, this only leaves Courtney Brown and Dowayne Davis as the only
other safeties on the roster. The Cowboys would have to hope that God
is on their side for no injuries.
But in all reality everybody, the Cowboys aren't going to get rid of
Roy Williams. If a trade situation was appealing enough, then maybe.
But not many teams are going to be wanting to take over his high
contract, and the 'Boys won't cut him because the casualties suffered
on the cap for the team would be too severe.
Dave Campo, the new secondary coach, should help Roy Williams adapt to
the system and become a better player. If he continues to struggle,
then the Cowboys won't keep him around in 2009. Simple as that.
